Christmas Dinner

December 20, 2020 in Sustainability

12 Days of a GREEN Christmas- Day 8: Christmas Dinner Table

Growing up we always have Christmas dinner and we also eat, my favorite, Eggs Benedict on Christmas morning. Both meals have always been served on my Mom’s Christmas china. Christmas china something I’ve always wanted for my family too. My mom happened to run across this china set being sold at a consignment store for an unbelievable price. It’s secondhand, and even better it was made in England. Spode now makes their dishes in China.

A sustainable Christmas table doesn’t have to be less convenient and more difficult. It can be even prettier and more special. For a sustainable dinner table, consider a few of these swaps:

  1. Use cloth napkins, instead of single use napkins.
  2. Set out your everyday dishes or Christmas china, instead of single use plates, cups, and silverware. Being able to toss out paper plates is convenient but there is something special about eating on Christmas china, it almost becomes a tradition.
  3. Use real leaves, plants, pinecones, and greenery for decorations. It’s easy and free to collect greenery from your very own backyard!
  4. Decorate with food. Consider adding your gingerbread house as a centerpiece, clip rosemary as garnish, make your cheese ball into a Christmas tree shape instead of a ball, or make a pastry into the shape of a tree. There are so many ideas on Pinterest!

If you’re looking for china Replacements is a good place to check. They’re a huge warehouse filled with china, located near Greensboro, NC. We went there several years ago.

Before Kevin’s granddad passed away he gave us their fancy dinner china. Over the years pieces had broken and for a wedding gift to us we went to Replacements to find the missing pieces and complete the set. It’s a very special family heirloom to us!
