12 Days of a GREEN Christmas- Day 10: Christmas Dinner
Christmas is only 9 days away and you may be thinking about what you’ll be having for your Christmas dinner. It’s a strange year and you may or may not be having a large gathering. Here are a few tips to help have a sustainable Christmas dinner.
Before your meal:
- Plan your meal ahead to know how much food to prepare to avoid food waste.
- Locally source produce and meats
- Shop local farmers markets
- When shopping for groceries bring your own shopping bags and produce bags.
- Shop in bulk for ingredients where you can bring your own reusable containers.
- When cooking use reusable liners like Silpats and reusable parchment paper. Also, use your baking dishes instead of disposable ones.
Compost your food waste
Why is it important to reduce food waste in the landfills?
In a landfill the nutrients in food/ yard waste do not have the right environment to decompose and when it rots it produces methane gas, which is a strong greenhouse gas. Methane gas is much more potent than carbon dioxide.
By composting your food scraps and yard waste, you have the potential to reduce 30% of what you would throw away. Also, your compost turns into a great nutrient rich soil for your garden and emits zero methane gas!
Leftovers
- Get creative with leftovers, try a turkey soup or turkey salad sandwiches.
- If you bought too many ingredients like cans you could donate them to a local food bank.
- Make a broth or stock with your scrap vegetables and meat. If you can’t do it right away freeze the scraps.

Bon Appetite! I hope you have a delicious and sustainable Christmas dinner!
